Wings and Winds, Swamp Tales and Friends

Late Saturday night we went on after church and meeting with Tessa
and her family. We decided to make Asheville and drove through the Smokey Mountains and missed most of it during the night. We stayed at a Wallmart that night so we could get to a place to watch the game the next day.

Sunday, October 8th we were in Spartanburg, NC. We decided to flee Knoxville to avoid Hurricane Nate's warpath. We were going to watch the Rams game in Ashville but decided we could get a little further out of the path by traveling a bit further. We found the local Buffalo Wild Wings (BWW) in Spartanburg and called ahead to make sure they would put the Rams game on a screen we could see.

Throwback jerseys on, we went into the sensory overloaded BWW and sat down to watch the Rams beat the Seahawks. There were even other Rams fans in the house, 2 to be exact. Two Hawks fans sat a table away.

As we watched the game we noticed that the weather was changing dramatically, wind and rain, and dark skies. About halfway through the game, just after halftime, we started having weather warnings go off and some sirens somewhere. Then there was a lady on the screen showing the areas at risk from a large cell with tornados possible. She outlined the areas and asked people to stay in their shelters in these areas until after 5 PM.

People in BWW hardly even noticed looked up once and went on eating. We asked the waitress and she said, "Oh its okay if things get bad in this area we will come get you and take you to our safe area."
Oh, and where would that be, the kitchen where all the knives and pots and pans could kill us.

Because the game was on, and several other games, too, the restaurant held steady with wings and ribs in hand. A few minutes later the tv screens all went to a 'Technical difficulties because of weather" screen. People just pulled out their cells and watched the game or game-cast on their phones and munched away criticising plays, applauding catches, and wiping barbecue sauce off their faces.

The last two minutes of the game showing the tie and then the Hawks field goal showed on the big screen and the valiant effort of the Rams to take over with w touchdown. Last play of the game Goff threw a 20-yard pass that would have clinched the game and it fell out of the hands of the receiver.
The Rams did not win.  We dodged a hurricane and ran into tornadoes. The weather did move on and the RV was still waiting outside as we left and headed to Magnolia RV Park to stay for the night.  I was just a quick stayover and then out.

As we traveled from Magnolia RV, we headed to Colleton State Park. The ranger there was great, and the rates, good.  It was dark when we checked in. This time the Admiral was looking to stay in this rustic cabin. No entry, Admirals not allowed. When he awakened in the morning he went out to scout the land.

Wandering down by the river he saw the moss hanging off the trees, a swampy looking river and a tree he had never seen before. The pods bore red seeds and were very interesting.

The park attendees were out, birdwatchers, walkers, readers, and those having breakfast around their fires. He thought he would wander down to the river and see if there were any birds or animals that might be interesting. At the water's edge, he ran into this sign. Not literally. He quickly decided that this was not the place to wander.

He wandered back to the RV shaken wanting to hang out inside until we were in a safer area.

Bob spent a couple hours talking with a couple from Alaska and found out another camper near us had lived most of his life in Washington state.

Today, we left that area later in the day and proceeded to go down the road towards Savannah. On the way, we saw signs for Hilton Head Island and we were intrigued. I remember hearing that name before, but couldn't place where. We headed there only to find that we were out of our league.

  1. Hilton Head is out of the Admiral's league, not the other way around!
